It's Show Business Baby!!! By Samuel Fiset

For some time now, there has been a huge dilemna on the salary that professional athletes earn. Some people say they are overpaid and some think that they completely earn there salary. As for me, I think that professional athletes completely earn the millions that they are given to play their sport. Pro athletes are not overpaid since they are the best at what they do, they start young and finish young and finally, the people are the ones who pay for their success.

First of all, the athletes that are paid millions to play their sport are the best at what they do.
What does an average accountant make? Probably a comfortable living, but an accountant who is the best at what he does makes millions every year. This is the same principle for professional athletes. So why should it be different for them? Playing a professional sport like basketball, hockey or football is a glorified and rare job but nonetheless it requires great skill. The only reason accountants, doctors, dentists or lawyers dont get the same argument is that their salary is not published in the newspaper every day. If it did, people would be eager to study for the job and dream for it the same way people dream of being a professional athlete.

Secondly, professional athletes start young and finish young. Since pro athletes start young, they need to have sufficient money in order to pursue their life after there professional careers. Most professional athletes get drafted out of highschool or beginning of college therefore they do no have the time to fully go through their study's and ensure a job after they retire from sports. How would you live if you had gotten your highschool diploma then went pro and after your pro career could not get a job because of a lack in education. This is why pro athletes have a reasonable salary because it ensures their security and well being later on in their life.

Lastly, its all about show business. Many people argue about athletes having a too high salary but let's not forget that these are the same people that would pay 50 or even 100 dollars to go to a basketball, hockey or football game. The salary of these athletes come from the owner, the owners revenue comes from where? Us. We are the ones who watch the games on T.V and who pay to get jerseys of our favorite players. We are the reason why these athletes have high salary's. So what should we do. Should we stop watching games and make ourselves get a privilege taken away from us because the people playing what we love are overpaid?

So, what do you think? Do athletes really get overpaid or is this argument just a simple case of jealousy. Athletes are not overpaid since the are the best at what they do, they start young and they finish young and finally we are the ones giving them their salary. So before whining about how they are having an unfair salary and that they didnt work hard, think about what you just read and think about what would happen if we people would lose our beloved sports forever.
