First of all, a doctors job is way more important than an athletes job. Do you agree that saving lives is more important than shooting a puck into a net? Doctors are pressured everyday to save and help people. They are stressed out everyday dealing with people and doing all sorts of operations and surgery- they even help mothers have their babies! Athletes well, they play their sport and score goals. Do you see the difference? According to John Gugie, ''I mean what importance are they to society beyond entertainment. This person is clearly stating that athletes do not have a big role in society. There are also many other people who have more importance in society. For instance, the military, firefighters and the president who actually controls the whole country. These are people who should earn more cash than athletes.
Secondly, the money could be used for many other way more important things. It could help cancer treatment, the people in developing countries that desperately need resources and money could also help these countries advance. We can also create more jobs for people by investing in more places that need workers. Just think about this. Would you rather improve the cancer treatment, or look at someone run to first base? A person from the site Debate.org thinks that all that money could help the homeless, cancer and our country's economy. This proves that money could be put to use to many other more important things instead of over-paying an athlete. Would you rather improve our society or improve an athlete?
Thirdly, athletes get so much money for making mistakes. Basically, there is no difference between the money earned of a good hockey player and a bad hockey player. Both of them are going to get their salaries anyway. Even if athletes are not performing well, it is like it does not matter. They get their money no matter what happens. For example: Alex Roidriguez who plays for the Yankees. He did not get hits last year so they benched him during games. Per at bat he gets an average of $200,000! Slo basically he gets $200,000 to strikeout. That is simply outrageous! Another example is Scott Gomez when he played with the Montreal Canadiens a few years ago. One season he played 80 games missing only two games and after all those games getting only seven goals. Seven goals in 80 games! That is horrible for an offensive player! On top of that his plus minus that year was a -15. Listen to this, his salary that horrible year was $8,000,000 dollars! Scott Gomez still got that salary by scoring seven goals and being a -15 in plus minus! This proves how even if you do not perform well in a sport, the athlete still earns the same amount of money.
In conclusion athletes are overpaied because there are a lot more other jobs that are way more important, the money can be used in many other more important things, and athletes still earn the same amount of money even during horrible performances. Do you think that athletes should be paid that much for that little they bring to society, or do you think that doctors, teachers, the military or the president who help society way more should earn more money?
