In game 6 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals, one of hockey's greatest moments happened. With 13:44 remaining in the 2 period, Paul Kariya was blindsided by Scott Stevens. Kariya was motionless on the ice. Even though I did not see the game live or even the next day, just watching it caught my breath. They whole arena was holding its breath. Miraculously, he got up but with a lot of help. The Ducks best player was going to the hospital but Paul Kariya was not a person who let injuries get in his way of playing hockey. He came back and no one, including me could believe it. The announcer, John Davidson, was shocked even saying " I didn't think we'd see him till next year." Even Scott Stevens was dumbfounded. No one could believe he was back.
Five minutes after his return, Kariya got the puck and proceeded to blast one of hockey's greatest shots right by Martin Brodeur giving the Ducks a 4-1 lead. The arena went nuts. Announcer Gary Thorne gave one of hockey's greatest calls and quotes with his call "Off the Floor, On the Board" hence the title. It was a very emotional moment for him, his team and the crowd. This moment really caught me and it is something that will stay in my heart for a long time.
I remember that hit! Scott Stevens was a dirty player in my opinion. I would love to hear a bit more why that play marked you! Thanks for uploading the link! I wonder today with all the concussions and the new NHL policy if he would have been allowed back in the game?
